I received an older full-frame digital camera
body and two adapters for my old analogue
lenses in April 2021. I was convinced the
digital-eye would be a good addition to my
analogue set of old medium format cameras.

First B&W digital shots at fully open aperture
(1.4) left me deeply disappointed. The images
were bleak, grays were boring and blacks reminded
me of washed out ink spots. I repeated the experiment
with color filters (Leitz and Zeiss - yellow, orange, red).
The results increased my frustration, so I bought an
expensive monitor and some cheap chinese color
filters for B&W photography at 2,5€ a piece.

As much as I would like to hide my vision behind
someone else's writing, to save my slow night and
preserve a fragment of dignity, I cannot. It was
first time in my life I knew what I was doing and
what to expect from the results. Here are few
ground rules for my B&W photography:

* cast away your own expectations and convictions
on how the photography should look like.

* shoot in maximum radius of 3 km from home.

* do not remove “disturbing” elements from the
shooting-scene but try to use them in the composition.

* search not for the motives. Focus on banalities
and learn to look at the spaces between the objects.
Let the lense create its own mythology. Let the
lense become your rorschach test and the finder
of our phantasms and folklore origins.

* do not censor unpleasant contents.

* shoot in diffused light, at low light (dusk, dawn,
dark), in the rain, in excessive light.

* use only 50mm lenses at apertures 1.4, 2.0 and 2.8.

* use only cheap color filters. Obnoxiously green
and blue filters are recommended.

* use the camera in manual mode. Autofocus is
not desired. Try to avoid using a stand if it is not
necessary.

* do not use your own artificial light sources
(flashes, photo bulbs and led lights, etc). You
may use light sources such as room lights,
street lights, traffic lights, city lights…

* photo-retouching is not desirable in post-processing.

* cropping of pictures is not desirable.

* do not waste too much time over editing the
photos. Try to not make them too sterile.

* the images will not have titles. We leave them
to your Imagination.

when you get tired of it, break the rules

* cast away your own expectations and convictions
on how the photography should look like.

In May I got a companion in this weird
and lonely adventure. Together with my
neighbor's son in law we’re learning to
draw the difference between looking
and seeing.
